Audition sheet music

Updated: 40+ Songs for Stage and Show Auditions

Do you want to try out for a talent show like the X-FACTOR or AMERICAN IDOL? Are you preparing for a musical theater audition or just want to sing on stage? Musicnotes is here to help! We’ve explored our digital sheet music files and consulted with auditioners and fellow auditionees to offer you suggestions for songs that we think you’ll love.

One song in particular that you might want to consider practicing is  “The 60 Second Audition.” This song was written specifically to highlight a vocalist’s ability performing different musical styles and techniques within sixty seconds, and you may transpose the key after purchasing to fit your vocal range.

If you’re not sure what your vocal range is or how our Singer Pro arrangements differ from other sheet music selections, we invite you to read our post about Deciphering Singer Pro Sheet Music and Finding Your Vocal Range.

  1. Malcolm Banham

As a pro session singer and singing teacher, I have to highlight one problem with your ‘recommended’ lists of audition songs. Most of them, being really well-known, will have been heard by auditioning panels a million times; and, having been on both sides of the ‘table’, I assure you, you do get to the mental state where you think ‘If i hear My Heart Will Go On one more time, I’m going to shoot the singer!’ I feel what would have been much more useful would be a list of undiscovered ‘gems’ that will come across as fresh, e.g. something like ‘Maybe I Like it This Way’ from ‘the Wild Party’. One of the things directors, etc. are looking for is the ‘something different’ element: i.e., the ‘X’ Factor – not the ‘Z’ Factor!

    • Jenny Anderson

This is a great observation. I would love it if others would add their undiscovered gems to this list. I’m a middle school chorus teacher looking for two things: 1) ideas for my kids for solo festival that they’ll love, suitable for 11- to 13-year-olds, and 2) something for me to sing in “faculty follies” this year that both kids and parents will love and will suit a very non-pop-singer voice. (Malcolm, I totally agree about My Heart Will Go On! In a previous life in the 90s as a singing teacher, after the umpteen hundredth adolescent girl brought that song to her lesson, I posted a sign : This Studio is a Titanic-free Zone!)

      • Kenneth Christensen

I agree the Theme from Titanic sucks and I banned it too, after you couldn’t by a drink at 7-11 for three years without Celine Dion’s recording coming over the radio. After having to teach ad-nauseum for over a year, I hid the music so well in my parent’s house I could not find the sheet music until a month ago. I also banned Wicked, Frozen and anything that reeks of banality and over-popularity. Kenneth Christensen. I never perform anything as a church soloist featured during pledge week on PBS either. For my Christmas recital this year I have only included Silent Night as the final encore.

    • Michelle

If you could enlighten us and suggest a better list of songs, it would really help me

    • Barry

I’m currently in the final of Edinburghs got talent contest being held live at playhouse theatre any recommendation on what to sing thanks

  2. I cannot believe that you have included “Summertime” in a list of songs for male singers. It is bad enough that “Porgy and Bess” is so often treated as a West End musical, rather than the opera it is, but to list for tenor/bass one of the loveliest soprano arias beggars belief. I would think that any adjudicating/auditioning panel would think it most inappropriate. If you want to advocate fatherhood, why not “My boy Bill” (Soliloquy) from “Carousel”?

    • Larry Yarwood

THIS MUST HAVE BEEN AN ERROR…..But if not,
lets suggest “Ol Man River” for Soprano voice !

    • Peter

Having sung “My Boy Bill” with a very well trained voice, I’d venture to say that it’s not something someone should attempt if they’re looking for songs online. It’s nine pages long with a very wide range and several different sections. It’s beautiful, but not for the faint of heart or untrained pipes.

    • andrew

i know its the worst thing ever, how could he be so silly!

  3. Erica

I whole heartedly concur with these posts, as a professional vocalist, actor, and voice coach, the very last thing you should advise a singer to do is sing something OVERDONE. There are so many original songs out there to choose from that will make a singer stand out at an audition and none of the listed songs here will do that.

    • Joe Mills

I am actually replying to your comment to ask you for some advice for my audition for the Xfactor 2011. I would compare myself to Robbie Williams as I feel I have a good voice but also want to entertain the audience at my audition. I am planning on singing “feel” by Robbie at my audition but wondered if you could give me any advice on how to stand out and be a bit different ?

    • Kenneth Christensen

I have avoided singing the following things most of my career.. This OVERDONE LIST may help you.

      1. My Heart Will Go On
      2. The Sound of Music (the music is gaggy and I hate the musical’s plot)
      3. The Wizard Oz, The Wiz or Wicked
      4. Andrew Lloyd Webber, especially Phantom of the Opera
      5. Three Tenors Encores: O Sole Mio, Torna a Surriento, etc…
      6. Beatles or Top 10 Elvis Songs
      7. Hit Songs from Current Musicals or Movie Love Themes
      8. Any Song Made Famous by a single performer, a.k.a. Barbara Streisand, Frank Sinatra, Elvis, etc…
      9. Top Christian Pop Hits
      10. Disney Songs (especially anything from The Little Mermaid on)
      11. Opera arias features on TV or in current movies
      12. Andrea Bocelli Songs featured during Channel 11 (PBS) Telethons.

      • Elizabeth Taylor

then please list what you WOULD sing –

  4. Denise Duellman

All 5 of the first listed songs for women are on the list of songs one should not sing for a college musical theatre audition. Don’t get me started on the men’s songs. Kids shouldn’t be singing overdone songs or songs that are identifiable with one singer. It’s the kiss of death.

  5. Claire Brown

Dear Music Notes, I agree that some of the songs listed are overdone. I do like the Classical selection. I spent the afternoon listening to songs that are not as well known. It was a pleasure to hear Once Upon A Dream from Jekyll and Hyde, How Could I Ever Know from the Secret Garden, and yes, Can’t Help Falling in Love With You from All Shook Up. There are wonderful songs from Oliver, Guys and Dolls, South Pacific, Musicman, Bells Are Ringing, and of course, South Pacific. I hope this will help you. Claire Brown

  6. pam munro

I agree – why not give singers some interesting choices?

  7. Rebecca Somberg

There an association of songs to famous artists.
When a singer auditions, it does not serve the singer well to do the standard songs that have been already made popular by well known singers on recordings.
As a voice teacher, and audition coach, I recommend that singers sing material that shows off their gift, not the song.
There are many songs that tell wonderful stories, and make it easy to sing brilliantly. Show the voice, communicate the story, and make it look easy. Keep it short, and enjoy.
It’s the singer, not the song.

  8. G.M. Matteson

I am a teacher, a performer, and an accompanist at a college.
I agree that some of the selections on your list are too cliche’ and unimpressive.
Spelling correction: Turandot ( not Turnadot )

  9. Kerry O'Connor

I agree with Malcolm, it’s like, just watch any of the seasons of Idol auditions and you’ll hear all those songs a dozen or more times – sung badly. Unless you can sing these listed songs on a pro-level and with your own twist, it’s really quite cliche and frankly, not in your best interest to attempt them in an audition. Have we not been listening to Simon?? Being a voice and piano teacher I was excited to see the list to get some good ideas for students, but I was pretty disappointed. As far as musical theater goes, Wicked and Les Mis? They are being so overdone right now on a lot of popular TV shows – Glee and Susan Boyle… anyway, my suggestion is listen to your vocal coach or teacher and find something that shows your sweet spots and your personality.

  10. Sean Malynn

I agree with the above comments, getting ready for an America’s Got talent audition myself, (and i am racking my brains!) I am trying to find songs people know, but have maybe been forgotten, songs that when people hear, they might think …wow i remember that song, takes me back….. an audition is such a short amount of time to really do the best you can , so it is really worth digging deep when looking for something to perform, something that leaves an impression…………thanks for reading!

  11. I agree wholeheartedly with the previous two comments. This is a very bad list that looks as if it’s been compiled by someone who doesn’t know repertoire at all, let alone work in the industry. In addition to the comments by Foster and Banham, “Ach, ich darf nicht…” from Fledermaus is a short duet (that requires both singers) and does little to show off (in an audition setting) the soubrette who sings that text. It’s not a good audition piece at all. Either of Adele’s arias would be much better than this, particularly her “audition” aria,”Spiel’ ich die Unschuld vom Lande.”
And “Zion hört die Wächter singen?” Really?!? That’s the tenor choral part from a church cantata. It’s not even a solo. And if it was, I could still think of 1000 other pieces that would be more appropriate for a tenor to use in auditions. As for “Nessun dorma,” if you have to look at list of recommended rep to give you ideas about what to sing, then you shouldn’t be singing this. It’s a very difficult aria for a tenor to pull off effectively (and should never be sung by a baritone or bass). And I would apply the same remarks above regarding “My heart will go on” to “O mio babbino caro.” If I hear that sung (badly as usually is the case) in an audition again, I’m going to ask the singer to stop and sing something else. Further, seven out of the eleven (not 10 as is stated) pieces in the classical rep list are gender and voice-type specific – not pieces that would be sung by either gender.
Please do a better job with your research before leading singers down a path that will not serve them well.

  12. I must agree that many of the songs (especially for women) are so well known (and overdone) or so well associated with a specific singer, that they are not good choices for an audition. Audition songs should be appropriate to the style of the show or event, and should showcase the best you (not you trying to sing as well as Whitney Houston). And choosing something different, but appropriate will intrigue the people behind the table!

  13. Jenny Anderson

I hope singers looking at this classical list will consult their teacher before choosing. Many of these are appropriate for young singers, but arias like O Mio Babbino Caro and Nessun Dorma are for very experienced singers only. When I taught in England, Nessun Dorma (with Pavarotti) was the theme song for the England World Cup soccer team. I had 15-year-old boys begging to sing it. I told them to come back in 10 years and we’d see!

  14. Tom, Ferent

You have got to be kidding!!!!!!!! The songs you selected for male singers are not for Broadway auditions except for Music of the Night. That tune I would never do because it is worn out.
Here’s a few for your list: !) I won’t send roses- Mack and Mabel 2) It only takes a moment-Hello Dolly 3) Come Back to me- On a Clear Day 4) Moving too fast- The last Five years

  15. Berta Calechman

I have to agree with the above comments. As an opera singer, I would bet my life on the fact that if judges hear “O Mio Babbino Caro” sung yet another time, they will lose their lunches. And if it’s a solo audition, how can you suggest the Brindisi from “Traviata” (A soprano/tenor duet.)?
For a non-classical audition, I think that right now, “I Dreamed a Dream” is on the brink of overstaying its welcome. If you must choose “Wicked,” (which I love, by the way,) how about “For Good,” which is not an easy piece, but a great one. Audition pieces are tough choices!

  16. Tom Clark, Tokyo

If a tenor wants to do a Josh Groban piece, don’t do “You Raise Me Up.” It’s just repetitive words with key changes– “Danny Boy” without the nice story. “You’re Still You” is far superior.

  17. Andrea

I agree that these songs are overdone. I was also disappointed when I saw that only two sections were created…it would have been nice to see, for example just one female vocal section for Broadway songs.

  18. Debra Shepherd

I find these comments to be very helpful. I’m the parent of a high school freshman who has been to a few auditions. It’s tough to find pieces for her. I knew instinctively that people probably get sick of hearing the same pieces over and over again.

  19. Karen Kennedy

This list that you have compiled doesn’t help the professional singer at all, There is sooooo much music out there, why repeat?? Why not investigate other genres like song cycles and arias from little known or performed operas, and don’t mix voices!!! “Summertime” sung by a man??????? I agree 100% with John Johnson…ditto on his remarks. PS I am a lyric/dramatic soprano singing in Ecuador, so any piece works, since opera is a “new experience” for most here. However, it is essential for any singer to sing according to his/her voice type, and the coach is always the best judge of a person’s capabilities on that “score” (pun intended). Seek and Ye shall find!

    • no

i am ecuadorian and so is my dad so thats great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. As a Producer and Musical Theatre Director — if anyone auditioned with songs from this list — I would pretty much disqualify them in the audition process — unless they presented a TOP of the line audition.

I have had so many young actors (male & female) audition with inappropriate songs – and for roles that are totally wrong — can you imagine an 18 yr old size 4 auditioning for Mrs Lovett (Sweeney Todd) – with a breathy head voice — seriously!

Singing Actors — know the role – know the show —- and DON’T audition with a song from the show unless it is requested .

  21. Martha Bennett

I have to agree with all the previous comments. Your lists are not good for auditions. However, I really appreciate MusicNotes for getting this discussion started. I have taught singing and coached students for auditons for over 30 years. And as a performer I too have had to look for good audition pieces so I know how difficult it can be. The bottom line is that you want to find a song that is a good song muscially, that shows off your voice and talent as well as it possibly can, that makes you memorable, and that doesn’t get lost in a sea of “Gimme, Gimme(s)”, etc.
And on top of all that you have to find something that shows the auditioners what they want to hear and see from you!
The classical list is just all wrong, but that’s too big of a hornet’s nest to get into here. Thanks so much for trying though–keep it up MusicNotes!
If you’re looking to hire someone to help you with this, I’m interested! :o)

    • Susan

Agreeing with all above comments. As a vocal teacher and musical theater director I feel as though I am beating a dead horse with these tunes. A few suggestions of less know pieces my students have enjoyed…
“I Still Believe in Love” from They’re Playing Our Song
“The Tree” from The Me Nobody Knows
“The Girl I Mean to Be” from Secret Garden
“Waitin’ for the Light to Shine” from Big River
I’d love to see suggestions from others :)

  22. LilRomeo

How about Astonishing from Little Women

  23. malcolm banham

Good to see a lively debate following my comment. Another thing I’d like to see in an audition songbook is suggested editing for songs that are too long. Frankly, most directors, etc. only need 1-2 minutes (and indeed may only be able to spare that long!) to make up their minds about a voice. A song like, say, ‘I dreamed a dream’ is a non-starter for many reasons: too long, nothing exciting happens till about bar 33 – and it’s been done to death, thanks in part to SUBO!

  24. Jeanne

As a mature person auditioning for solos for Adult choirs/cabaret shows I have liked: “If You Love Me”(Hymme A L’amour); “Can’t Help Lovin’ that Man”from Showboat;”I Will Wait for You” from the Umbrellas of Cherbourg; “All Love Can Be “from film A Beautiful Mind; “Almost Like Being in Love; ”And this is My Beloved” from Kismet; “As Long As He Needs Me”from Oliver; “Speak Softly, Love” from the Godfather”Why Can’t you Behave; “Love Changes Everything from Aspects of Love; Moonfall” from the Mystery of Edwin Drood.
See The “Singer’s Musical Theater Anthology Soprano(have all voice type editions)Vol 2-Hal Leonard.

  25. Michele

I found the comments posted very helpful, can someone suggest an audition song for a 10 year old female. Something that isn’t overdone.

    • Lynne

      Reflection by Christina aguilera

    • Elizabeth

depends on her voice. Is she a lighter, higher voice or more of a belter. Audition for what? These things matter. Audition for theatre musical? Audition for jazz choir?

  26. charmaine mutsau

i hate having to spend hours looking for a song for whatever performance…this makes life easier:)

  27. Malcolm Banham

re Michele (Feb 8) if it’s a more lyrical number you want, how about ‘When She Loved Me’ from Toy Story 2. Lovely song!

  28. A. Henry

Interesting discussion. I came to this site searching for a song for my 15 year old son to sing for his next audition and my first thought upon looking at the list was “gee that’s not very helpful”. Well it is if everyone else is singing those choices! He recently auditioned for a show set in the 20’s with “Doing the Latest Rag” from the gorgeous Titanic, The Musical. As he’d recently had braces put in he needed something easy to sing but also charmimg and entertaining – he has a callback. My 13 year old daughter also auditioned for the same show and sang “You Made Me Love You” from Broadway Melody of 1938 – the one with the Dear Mr. Gable intro – she was complimented by the director for choosing a song that was age appropriate and suited the musical she was auditioning for- she too has a callback. I think choosing somewhat unusual pieces makes the directors sit up and listen – there was more than one “Popular” and “Part of Your World” being rehearsed in the hallway that day! I’ve learned something from all of you – thanks!

  29. kelly

i am auditioning for the x factor this year and i am really struggling to pick a song. I dont want to do a song everyone does and make a show of myself because of that one reason, but my vocabulary of songs isnt great if it isnt celine dion or mariah or whitney houston. all of your comments were very open and honest so i would really appreciate some help xxx
    thanx xxx

  30. Karen

I’m a 43 yr old mezzo who sings classical arias and sacred songs. I want to branch out and explore music theater, but I have no idea what songs to prepare for auditions. I don’t consider myself a belter so I don’t want to do anything that would be disastrous for my voice given my inexperience with music theater pieces. I would appreciate any suggestions.

  31. Hi, I am auditioning for a boyband next week. im 23 and run my own business singing at weddings etc. I do a lot of songs but never really sing acapella. I sing Michael buble, ronan Keating, Damien Rice etc. I have a few demos on my website which might give people an idea of my voice. Any songs etc would be greatly appreciated.

  32. jordan mcsheffery

    uuuurrrrggggg this didnt rly help
u see im auditioning for this special chorus for my school……..i mite do seasons of love…… rly not sure……anyone hav suggestions???????

  33. Emma

those songs to sing are all horribly cliche. I’m a young, teenage musical theatre performer and I would NEVER sing those songs at an audition or at an eisteddfod as the adjudicator would get bored and know that I don’t have enough talent, enthusiasm or energy to search for better songs.

  34. meg

omg i am doing a auditon for hooks return on the 4/12/2010 and i need a really good song to sing for he audtion and nothing to high pitched or to hip hopy music please help me !!!!! :(

  35. Lucas

Hey a talent show is comin up. I’m 13 and I did really good last year and the song I sang was crawl by Chris Brown. I just can’t find anything right now. If you can gimme some suggestions that’d be nice. Ight thanks.

  36. Jazminee

every rose has its thorn, i’ve been in many many plays and i audition with it every time, ;]

  37. Charlotte

My 16year old daughter is auditioning on sunday for the first time she’s not sure what to sing unaccompanied she’s thinking about hopelessly devoted to you!! What else could she do???

    • kevin p

You never want to have her unaccompanied in the future, because the accompany is there to support the vocals and without the voice might be shaky. There are a ton of songs she can do depending on her voice type. Just be sure not to do a song that is well overdone.

    • theaterlover

NO Grease! its a horrible audition song and it isn’t that flattering

  40. Katie

I am auditioning for the X-factor to and am thinking of singing “Fall For You” by Secondhand Serenade any other good songs?

    • Sherri

As much as i love that song, it isn’t a very good audition song. It wont really accent your voice. You want to sound irresistible and unforgettable, you dont want to be another face in the crowd. Best of lucky though.

  41. Kristi

Any song suggestions for a soprano girl auditioning for Sweeny Todd?

  42. musicaltheaterlover

every song there is on a no no list everywhere else. every song is way overdone you should NEVER audition with a Wicked song

  43. Cameron

    I still cant pick one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  44. Melissa

I’m a 14 year old girl, who has been trying to get into shows. I haven’t done that well yet and I always show up unprepared. My Best friend is helping me out this time So I have a shot. Try happiness from Charlie Brown. It’s supposed to be multiple ppl singing but if it’s a solo performance it’s still cute. Thank you everyone who posted a comment or advice! It has been helpful! :) advice: focus on the strong points of a song, and do songs that sound good with your voice!

  45. Krat

These are okay for me ( a 14 year old female alto) but it dosnet do crud for my little 10 yearold brother. Anyways like I said I’m 14 and I’m a girl I’ve always gotten chorus parts because I freak out when I auditon infront of anyone even though I know all my directers I have ever had. Anyways all the songs and coments have helped me pick a song for audition’s tomarrow. Lets hope that I get the lead or an important role. Thank You!

  46. Megan

Hello! Im an employee at mcdonalds and am gonna audition for the nationwide next voice of mcdonalds conpetition . I am an instrumentalist and vocalist at the high school for performing and visual arts so that is a plus for me, but i am having trouble choosing a song to sing. I have no clue where to look or what to choose. Any help is greatly appreciate! Thankssss !

    • AlexGrace

well it depends on what type of voice you have; but a belt song always wins over people hearts:’)

  47. aka

guys. im a metzo soprano. best belting as an alto. auditions are tmrw and i need a good song! any suggestions?

  48. Someone

Don’t do a super slow country song when you audition. It just makes the director think you’re boring.

  49. Bella

I’m 12 years Old and Ive made a Band and we have done Talor Swifts- Love Story and it went down really well! Also we have done Umbrella and Hey Soul Sister and Use Somebody.

    We also did Fix You

  50. Kyla futrell

Hi my name is kyla and I love singing I’m am ten years old please pick me to sing I will be posting videos of me singing and dancing !!!Love yah!!!!!!

  51. Melissa

I’m looking for a suggestion for something for a 13 year old girl to sing. She looks older. She is a soprano, has a really powerful voice, and loves to belt. She is shy and everyone is always suprised when she sings. She has just started entering contests. She usually sings “You Haven’t Seen The Last of Me” which she relates to the bullies at school or “Hurt” which she relates to losing her mom or nana. She really gets into her songs and puts on a show. So does anyone have any suggestions on what would be some good songs for her to sing. It’s hard for me to find a song, especially pop, that has a lot of range. I’m just not good at this stuff. Suggestions…Please! :)

    • vittori

      how about
‘when you believe’, the prince of egyt version? it’s a beautiful song and it has a lot of emotion in it, like the songs she usually sings and can try it as a duet with another girl. and her soprano voice wold really suit. in fact, any classic disney song would be perfect for her voice (though i havnt heard it)and most of those songs leave the audience stunned. but it also depends what she is singing for or who she is singing to. apart from that i think a simple yet meaningful song would suit.
      good luck!

    • vanessa

      Beautiful by C.A
Better in Time by Leona Lewis

    • V

I would say to sing Defying Gravity or The Wizard and I (both from Wicked) because they both have good belting parts towards the end of both songs. Also, the endings of both songs are more soprano, but some altos, like myself, can reach them…but they are probably easier for a soprano to hit. That’s my suggestion! :)

    • Ericka

Well, if she wants it to have meaning to her, try the song Helena by My Chemical Romance. The band wrote the song after the lead singer and his brother who plays bass lost their grandmother. Idk if it’s really her style, because it’s more of a rock song, but you could always make it slower and more acoustic and it’ll sound more beautiful.

    • Alexa

Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again from Phantom of the Opera it is a great song for a strong soprano and it seems like she would be able to connect with the sense of loss within the piece although I will admit it can be overdone because of it popularity best of luck

I am looking for a song for an 12 year old girl, she is out going, loves to sing Christina Aguilera (sorry if i spelled it wrong) i love to sing sad songs, and im looking for a song to sing, and if you could, could y’all give me some ideas to look somewhere to sing on stage other than church, in Oklahoma City?

    • key

Find an amature theatre company to participate in.

It will really improve your vocal, acting and dancing skills (or develop them)

    • Meghan

Jar of Hearts maybe? Except it’s kind of low…

    • Brit

Try “Oh mother” by Christina. It has wonderful range. It’s emotional but has a stern impact. Very beautiful. Try anna graceman’s “See you in my Memories” it’s a 9 yr old’s song but she sings like an angel. Very sad but very powerful still. (: i REALLY hope you look up both of those songs.

    • Miranda

Hurt by Christina Aguilera i a good sad song.

    • Em

“There is a castle on a cloud” from Les Miserables. Beautiful song for a young girl

I’m looking for something for a 12 year old boy to sing. He can sing from a low F to a D above high C in his full voice, and up to a C above high C in his head voice. He’s looking for one in his full voice. A COMMON SONG PLEASE!!!!!!! He loves to belt and puts a LOT of emotion in his noise. Thanks!

    • ooga

Awesome! It is great to see young male singers! Here are my suggestions…

      anything by The Fray
      anything by The Beatles

    • Rhonda

My son sang Red Ryder Carbine Action BB Gun from A Christmas Story the Musical for his last audition…age 12 and pretty much same range as listed above.

  54. Mitchell

I’m looking for a solo song to sing in bass preferably bass2 form for one of the choir concerts my school has this year, since this is my senior year and i have been in our Madrigals and A capella choirs for 3 yrs. During my sophomore year i lost access to a head voice due to voice change and have been able to sing very little high notes for a bass 2 since then. I’m not that confident i will be able to sing in from of a hundred or so people, but i’m willing to give it a try. So if you have any suggestions please give them, because i cant do this a lone.

  55. Miranda

I wanted to sing Over The Rainbow and i wasnt sure if i should because it was too old news… but this list showed me that i should always sing the classics! cool. thanx…

  56. ziza

which song is good for a girl that has a medium low voice and she is also shy and 11 but loves to sing songs that build up power so please help me to find her a song

    • Beth

Hi, I think that a good song for her to sing would be ‘Hometown Glory’ by Adele.

    • V

I would recommend singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow because it’s a nice sweet, slow song…almost like a lullaby. It’s good if your shy. If you like songs that build up power over time I would sing I Will Survive because it’s an empowering song and you can show great emotion while singing it! You should sing something that’s easy to remember and something that you enjoy to sing! That’s my advice! :)

    • sammy d hoss

I’m thirteen and I love thees songs they are modern so she may like them a lot. Most of the songs are songs that you can make your own and that’s really important if you want her singing to stand out. The songs I love and recommend are…Love the way you lie pt 2 by rihanna. Bubbly by colbie callet. Lights by ellie goulding. Take a bow by rihanna. A-team by ed sheeran. Jar of hearts by christina perri. Who knew by pink. No air by jordan sparks. Hailies song by eminem. My happy ending by avril lavign. Loose yourself by eminem. Thank you by dido. Cooler than me by mike posener. In the air of the night by phil collins. Big girls don’t cry by fergi. Sober by pink. Uncharted by sara barellis. Till the casket drops by ZZ ward. Trouble by kc. Breathe by anna nalick. Better in time by leona lewis. Our song by taylor swift. Love song by sara barelis. It will rain by bruno mars. I never told you by colbie callet.

    • nn

      Mrs.right by mindless behavior

    • lexi

ur stupid. i hope u know that. an 8 year old should be singing “first i disrobe you then imma probe you” so dont go off saying that it cant be bad. and if you audition u will NEVER get a part because they take no talent to sing. listen to katy perry live and u’ll see what nowadays “talent” is

    • Hmph

      ‘Umm these are stupid songs’
If you dont like the suggestions then go visit another site… :(

    • Chase

then you are looking on the wrong site, these are for theatrical auditions. (real musical talent)

    • Elizabeth

songs by disney stars are suitable for an 8 year-old
for eg:hannah Montanna :True friends , Best of both worlds Disney’s OST :a gift of a friend ,this is me(demi lovato)
for more trendy ones-Fire works(katy pery)
      One thing(one direction),You belong with me(Taylor swift)

  58. Peter

“Hallelujah” is not by Rufus Wainwright. It was written and originally performed by Leonard Cohen.

    • Daelyn

it was preformed by about 10 different people yes Leonard Cohen sang it first but so many other versions came out after

  59. emma

if its theatre search for theatre solo’s for females.

Plus what vocal type are you eg. Soprano, Mezzo Soprano, Alto….

    • vanessa

i think you should sing “i have nothing” Whitney Houston :)

    • Elaine DePrince

If you are comfortable with country, but need something from a Broadway musical, try singing “I Got Lost in His Arms” from Annie Get Your Gun. Look for the Reba McIntyre version on YouTube.

    • Elizabeth

Good girl by Carie Underwood í country and shows of your voice range

hi looking for song for estford auditions, i love to belt notes out i’m a ok singer. A faster upbeat song would be cool. I’m 15 and broadway or aucustic guitar songs would be good

  65. tori

Ooooo!!!! Defying Gravity!! The only problem is it’s a duet song and most auditions require solo songs. But, I might be able to pull out a part to sing. I Will Survive is also good for my voice range. Besides, I had to sing it for a choir concert, so I should be able to sing that. I’m an alto and I think these songs are good. :)

Hi there. I’m 15 and auditioning for my high school play Beauty and the Beast. They are looking for extremely strong soloists and very expressive singers. Both of which I am. I just have no clue what to sing. I was thinking about something along the lines of Don’t rain on my parade from Funny Girl but I’m not sure. What do you think?

  68. Jessie

Hi, I’m 17 and I have a musical Theature Class; I need a broadway/musical song that I can sing, like a second soprano. Something that is not sooo commonly used. Thank you.

  72. Lea

Please do an update for 2011 with newer songs or more classic pop songs and classical choices!

  73. Key

pop songs today are not really considered to be good songs to use for auditions, they are tacky and shallow plus the underlying innuendo’s are downright nasty- not appropriate at all…

It depends what she is auditioning for:
I suggest songs based on her age such as a solo from Annie or The Wizard of Oz etc….

    • Kenneth Christensen

Do not perform anything from Annie, Sound of Music or the Wizard of Oz. trust me no adjudicator wants to ever here those songs again, unless Judy Garland returns from the great beyond to do it!

  74. jessiephine lutero

hi im a mother of a 9 yr old girl she really loves to sing. but how will i know the range of her voice when in fact i do not know anything about music. i gave her cd’s with inspirational songs with good meanings but which one fit her voice range.songs of charice-in this song, is it okay.?

  75. rachel

I’m a 13 year old girl who is a second soprano and I need a good Broadway song for a audition in an area theater group. They already know me but I can’t help but be nervous. Any good suggestions please share! I really need to make a good impression. Thanks so much :)

  76. Nono

These are horrible suggestions for stage auditions. When one uses the term “stage” it refers to the Broadway genre, not to the pop stage of American Idol or the like. Just know for future reference.

  77. Vanessa Ndimubandi

hey my name is vanessa and i am 15 years old. i have always wanted to sing all my life because god gave me this amazing voice and i want to share it with the world! So how and where do i start?

  78. Lucy

great thanks a lot. 2 other good songs are Elton John- your song or wouldn’t it be lovelery- my fair lady

  79. jess

im 15 and i really need to get into this next musical…..i littlery gave up so many things so i can try out……im a sap. 2 and kinda shy but im ready to get out there and show the world i can do something….any sugestions??

  80. Faith

So Malissa, let me tell you that Katy Perry, Rihanna, ect, are not gonna get you any good roles or spots on stage. They have no real talent. The songs listed here on this sight are classic, beautiful audition songs that show real talent and passion. If you walked into auditions for a show I was directing with E.T, I might just throw my clipboard at you. These songs listed are NOT stupid. Don’t sing radio songs, Don’t sing songs with autotune. It’s like karoake. It doesn’t sound good. Sing something like Johanna by Sweeny Todd, or You Raise Me Up by the Celtic Woman. Do NOT put down classic audition songs that have won millions of roles for people. Because trust me, singing Stereo Heart at an audition is really easy to forget. Pick something that shows off range and voice, not something that shows your ‘in’. Learn something about real music before you audition for anything. Kay? Kay. ._.

  81. Emma

Does anyone know of a good song for a 12 year old girl who is out going constantly singing and likes to belt out the high notes?

  82. lidia

hey guys im 12, a treble, and need a great audtion song.

  83. Christina

Hey Melissa, what about Skyscraper by Demi Lovato? I’ve dealt with so many things through the years, but I have managed to come out on top depsite everything. I relate very deeply to the lyrics in Skyscraper, and I think it would be a good song for her too, it’s very soulful, but not too hard to sing and has a great message

  84. Hi my name is arketa davis i am 14 years old i live in baltimore maryland,i have a beautiful voice and i would like to sing at the X Factor.

  93. Michael Austin Rideout

These are great! I’m a bass and plan on doing a solo competition at my next showchoir competition! Anyone have any suggestions? I sang Circle of Life last time and i did HORRIBLE. This will be the second one we are going to, so i want to change it. Any advice will be great! :)

  97. Caitlin

I am 15 and I am soprano. I am trying to get into my high school advanced theater like i was last year, but this year the audition ropes are different. I need to find a 1 minute monologue( which I have found and memorized already ) and a 30 second song. Could anyone give me suggestions for 30 second songs? It would be really helpful. Please and Thank you sooo much(:

  98. Elizabeth

I am a 12 year old girl i really shy and I know I have a good voice but I don’t know who else would think so. I need a song that gives me confidence that I can sing great. If you have any ideas that would be great.

    • Bunny Smith

You probably have a great voice, no matter what kind it is. I am a fellow singer myself. I have been performing since I was in 3rd grade and I`m now in 8th. Good songs to show off and highlight your voice are:

      Someone Like You…..Adele
      Burn….Ellie Goulding
      Shake It Out….Florence +The Machine
      Let Her Go…Passenger
      Fireflies…Owl City
Somebody That I Used To Know….Gotye

For Two of my talent shows, I did Let Her Go and Fireflies

these are songs that are only some of my personal favorites..

      Good Luck!!!!
      (P.S im only 13)

  99. Emily bright

Im looking for a song for an 11 yr old girl (almost 12)… She likes sad songs like adele, etc she is thinking about singing an exerpt from LISTEN TO YOUR HEART (the chorus) but wont think that will cut it… SUGGESTIONS FAST!!! IF YOU REPLY, THANK YOU!!!!

  104. Alyssa

@ Emma, well first, you have to believe in yourself, and second, you should pic a song that you fits in your range, that you souldn’t normally sing, and then make it your own. LIke, pic a song that a guy would sing, and flip it. Make it something fresh and new!

  105. Violet

Hey I’m a 19 year old female and I have an audition in a few weeks for a vocal group on my college campus. I need two contrasting commercial songs that can really show my vocals and stage abilities. I can sing alto to 1st soprano, most comfortable in 2nd soprano. I have a power-style voice so I tend to be a belter. I am having trouble deciding on some good song choices to use. I was thinking an uptempo and a slow song, possibly a ballad. Any suggestions? Thank you!

  135. Bridgette

Hey I can’t sing high, at all. I’m 14 and need a song fast!!!!
It needs to be from a musical!

  136. jordan

i also would prefer better and a new song to sing

  137. Elizabeth

ummmm. Quite a few of the female choices here are on the NEVER do for an audition websites. Over the Rainbow? Never. Garland owns that song. And Defying Gravity? Broadway workshops are sending out emails to incoming students specifically stating NOT to bring anything from Wicked (or Frozen, for that matter)…I know because I’ve received such a notice.

  138. Breanna

An artist that I would suggest to maybe add to your list would be Ariana Grande. A lot of people are hesitant to listen to/sing her music because she is young and got famous from Disney channel, but her voice is astounding and very mature for her age, as was/is mine. I find that a few of her songs are quite beautifully done and show a range that is very specific to a certain type of singer. A few would be Tattooed Heart, Almost is Never Enough and Vienna(which was originally a Billy Joel song). Those three are some you should consider for your list.
    Thanks for your time.

  139. i need like belting songs for legally blonde auditions and I’m trying out for paulette, the hair dresser, so i need more upbeat and funnier songs

  140. Kel

I agree with those that say that you get to the point where you feel like you want to shoot the next singer that comes in with a Whitney song or a Heart song. How about Gene Pitney’s “I’m Gonna Be Strong” for a woman or a man? How about Gene Pitney’s “Only Love Can Break a Heart” done slowly by a male singer wanting to go Buble or a female singer wanting to go torchy?

  141. Jehimy Guzman

um do you guys know any upbeat song i can sing? vocal range alto-soprano.

  142. Shelby Guffey

This is….this is just an awful list of songs. Please take is down. Good lord.

    • Jillian Victoria

yeah this isn’t the kind of songs you want to sing at an audition, more up beat 2014 or 2015 songs… ones that a 2 year old would know

  143. Just found this but for someone who is writing about music its appaling that you dont apparently know that “Hallelujah” is by Leonard Cohen, NOT Rufus Wainwright and although i like Rufus the best album cover of this song, by far, is Jeff Buckleys rendition.

  144. Hello,

I need to audition to be allowed into the undergraduate music program at the university I will be attending in the fall. This is a part of the passage from the university’s website: “Vocalists should sing no less than two classical music selections from memory, one of which must be in English.”

Can someone please help me to select songs for this audition as soon as humanly possible? Thank you all!!!

***As a side note, I am a girl with a fairly low voice. I can comfortably sing in the alto and tenor range. The soprano range is a bit of a stretch for me.

  145. Amberlee Gunzaliz

These songs are completely overused, I was looking for new, upbeat songs but nooo, i had to get more old classical songs.

Hi my name is Jade and I’m 13. I am auditioning for my high school’s advanced and selected chorus. I am an upcoming freshman, so I have to get called to come in and audition. I am a soprano, I have some what of a raspy voice, I can belt if I try, sometimes my voice goes quieter at higher parts tho. I’ve been told I have a nice voice, but I want something to show off my vocals for this audition, but idk what please help!
