After bursting onto the newly revitalized pop music scene in the Summer of '99, ex-Mouseketeer Christina Aguilera
quickly secured a foothold in the music industry. The immense popularity of such singles as "Come On Over"
and "What a Girl Wants" and the general strength of her debut helped garner her a Grammy for Best New Artist.
In the time following, Aguilera was notably absent from the pop music scene as contemporaries including Britney
Spears continued to release new material. Aguilera, on the other hand, followed her initial success with the
release of 'Mi Reflejo', a Spanish-language version of her initial U.S. debut as well as a Christmas album entitled
'My Kind of Christmas.'
It wasn't until late October 2002 that Aguilera returned with a true followup to her self-titled debut. Sporting
a drastic image change with her debut single "Dirrty," controversy raged about the prior teen idol's new
"adult" image. Still the release of the her second single, the piano ballad "Beautiful," placed the focus onto Aguilera's
music rather than image, and helped usher in a flurry of new fans.
