Dave Brubeck's music is proof that creative jazz and popular success can go together. Compositions such as "Take Five," "In Your Own Sweet Way," "The Duke," and "Blue Rondo a la Turk" have become standards. A tremendously skilled and entertaining player, he remains one of the few household name in jazz.
Born Dec. 6, 1920, Dave Brubeck received early training in classical music from his mother, a pianist, and by the age of 13 was performing professionally with local jazz groups. In 1949 he organized the Dave Brubeck Trio, a group that existed until 1951, when, with the addition of Paul Desmond, Brubeck formed his first quartet. This group remained together until 1967, when Brubeck disbanded it to concentrate on composing.
Brubeck is well known for his use of poly-rhythms and poly-tonality (playing in two keys at once) in his original compositions, as well as his arrangements of other peoples' songs. Much of his music makes use of unusual time signatures; his long-time musical partner, alto saxophonist Paul Desmond, wrote what is arguably the quartet's most famous song, 'Take Five' (which is in 5/4 time).
