In the early 90's as "alternative" rock music took over the airwaves, punk revivalists Green Day were right there at the forefront of this musical revolution. While they didn't offer anything particularly "new" (at least to those already into the punk scene), they did make punk music popular.
Their major label debut, Dookie, propelled them to levels of success where they were one of the most influential bands of the 90's. Singles like "Longview" and "Basket Case" enjoyed heavy MTV and radio rotation, and it only took a little over a year for the band to release their follow-up, 1995's Insomniac
In the following years the band lost some of its appeal to broad audiences, as some of the newness of pop-punk began to fade (frankly, in the early 90s popular radio had heard nothing quite like them). The band released a few more records including Nimrod and Warning. The prior did propel the band once again to the forefront of pop music with their remarkably un-Green Day single, "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" - a song that has become a modern-day standard.
In 2004, however, the band shot back into the mainstream's consciousness with their remarkable punk rock opera, American Idiot. Hailed by fans and critics alike (and winner of the Grammy for Album of the Year), the album continues to succeed based on the strength of singles like "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," "Holiday" and the album's title track.
