With her debut album, Avril Lavigne crossed pop boundaries by infusing her teenage rock with a punk-girl sound and attitude. Her leading single, "Complicated," became an anthem for the members of the MTV generation who'd become fed up with the pre-packaged pop of the late 20th Century's boy bands. With her follow-ups of "Sk8er Boi," and "I'm With You" Lavigne proved her sudden rise to popularity was driven by more than simple hooks and a bad-girl look. It was, in fact, due to her skills as both a musician and a songwriter.
