Originally composed of four members, Radiohead was originally called On a Friday, playing gigs where they could fit them in around their schedules. Soon Johnny Greenwood joined the band, but shortly thereafter they went separate ways when the members went off to their respective colleges - after which they reformed and took on the name Radiohead (from a Talking Heads song "Radio Head."
They released their debut album, Pablo Honey in 1993 to mixed reviews yet gained international fame with the hit single "Creep." The Bends followed in 1995, with songs including "Fake Plastic Trees" and "High and Dry" making them a staple of modern British radio. However, it wasn't until the release of 1997's OK Computer that the band enjoyed its most massive critical praise. Feauturing an experimental rock sound, Radiohead soon became the standard upon which progressive rock was based.
Their most recent releases, Kid A and Amnesiac followed the band's progression from guitar-based rock to a more experimental mix of traditional and modern electronic music. In June of 2003 the band released their sixth major album, Hail to the Thief.
