W.A. Young is a prolific composer for opera, ballet, orchestra, piano, and classical guitar. The composer describes himself as a melodist and a neo-classicist. His musical works can be described as tonal and lyrical.
Webster Young's published arias -- which are for all voice types -- have been endorsed by various vocal competition judges, conductors, voice teachers, and prominent singers. Young's arias are considered to be well set for the voice. They have been used with success in vocal competitions -- such as the Center for Contemporary Opera's International Vocal Competition -- and in opera company auditions.
Young is also prolific as a composer of piano music. Pianists who search for music in a tonal idiom have described his music as very satisfying to play. Critics have described various pieces as "melodic", "virtuostic", "accessible", "strong thematically", "coming from a good ear", etc. Among the pianists who have performed Young's pieces with success is Youri Pochtar, 1st Prize Winner at the Moscow Conservatory, 1st Prize Winner of the Jose Iturbi piano competition.

Webster Young is the composer and librettist of six operas, from 1994 to the present. Before his opera work he was a prolific ballet composer. The 1990 International Who's Who in Music listed Mr. Young as "the most prolific composer for ballet in the U.S. in the 1980's". Several of his ballets were scored for solo piano. Two PBS-style TV documentaries have highlighted his work in both opera and ballet.
Mr. Young's family is related to Otto Harbach, writer of famous lyrics of Broadway operettas: "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes", "Rose-Marie", and "Indian Love Call", "Desert Song"and others.
Young received advice on opera composition from Samuel Barber in the year before he died. Among Webster Young's composition teachers was Charles Jones -- a close friend of Darius Milhaud. Young was trained in composition at the Juilliard School, the Manhattan School of Music, the Aspen Music Festival, and the University of California, Berkeley. He is a pianist, violist, and conductor.
