One of the earliest known English text canons, "Sumer Is Icumen In" was believed to have been written at Reading Abbey, Berkshire, in the mid-13th century. The song itself was quite scandalous, since Latin was the standard language for Abbey manuscripts in medieval England.
Traditional Middle English lyrics, sung in a round, celebrate the onset of summer with a host of animals, cuckoo birds, floral blooms and more. Read the modern English translation at the end of the piano/vocal arrangement of this month's free song.
