The official song of London's 18th-century Anacreonic Society, a club dedicated to musical, poetic and culinary appreciation named after the ancient Greek poet Anacreon, "To Anacreon in Heaven" was composed by John Stafford Smith in 1780.
Although the song was conceived to memorialize Anacreon, it is perhaps better known as the tune set to Francis Scott Key's early 19th-century poem "Defence of Fort McHenry," which, in 1931, became the national anthem of the United States (otherwise known by its "Star-Spangled Banner" title).
