About Sheet Music Manager App
The purpose of this app is to allow Musicnotes customers the ability to view items they've purchased from our store on their iPad device. This provides an easy way to flip through pieces from any comfortable location.
If you signed in using the guest account button you only have access to the free songs provided with the app. You will not be able to sync songs you've purchased until you sign out and authenticate using the email address associated with your purchases.
Once your user is established, use the navigation bar located at the bottom of the main screen to view, download and purchase new pieces or change settings.
My Sheet Music
The my sheet music section contains three subsections: All Songs, Folders and Set Lists. You can toggle between these to organize your sheet music. Folders and set lists have a plus button which allows you to add a new folder or set list. When you click the edit button you will see checkboxes next to the items in the selection table below the toolbar. You can perform bulk actions which are explained later.
My Sheet Music: Cover Flow
If cover flow is enabled, you will see a graphical representation of the items in the section you're currently looking at. Use your finger to slide through the available items and tap an image to make a selection. If you prefer, you can turn off the cover flow by tapping the button on the top right of the my sheet music section.
The first option on the navigation bar is my sheet music. All the sheet music you've purchased and synced with your account (including free sheet music) is accessible here. The cover flow provides a graphical preview of each piece. If you prefer, you can turn off cover flow using the button on the top right of the screen.
The edit button above your sheet music selection on the right side of the gray bar allows you to add multiple pieces to a folder or set list as well as remove them from the device.
To view a piece, simply tap it's row in the table or tap the current cover flow preview. Note: you can't open a piece in edit mode from the selection table.
When you tap the edit button, a new toolbar will appear at the bottom, under the selection table and each piece will now have a checkbox to the left. The edit button becomes a done button which allows you to exit edit mode. After checking which pieces you want to work with, choose an action using the buttons on the bottom toolbar: remove, add to folder or add to set list.
If you tap the "Add To Folders" button while in edit mode, you will see a dialog that contains all the available folders. Highlight the folder you want then click the add button. This popup also allows you to create a new folder by using the plus button located in the top right corner of the popup. You can also rename an item before you add the selected pieces.
If you tap the "Add to Set List" button while in edit mode, you will see a popup with all the same features as the folder's dialog just described, however this dialog lists all your available sets. Select the set you want to add the checked songs to and hit the add button.
Folders and Set Lists
Folders are used to organize your pieces. To view your folders, select the folder button in the middle of the gray bar, located above the selection table.
You can add a new folder by tapping the plus button on the right of the gray bar.
You can view a folder's contents by tapping its row or cover flow image (when not in edit mode).
When you enter edit mode by tapping the edit button you can remove multiple folders by checking them then tapping the remove button on the bottom toolbar. Edit mode also allows you to reorder folders by holding and dragging a row. You can also rename a folder by selecting a row in edit mode.
Holding your finger down over a folder's row for a few seconds will initiate edit mode, and the row you are on will become draggable, allowing you to reorder that folder.
After opening a folder, you will be taken to a familiar screen which contains just the pieces you specified for that folder. Use the add button on the gray bar to add songs not already in the folder. In edit mode you can drag and reorder the pieces or use the checkboxes to remove items from the folder. Holding down your finger on a row will initiate edit mode. If you sync the free sheet music of the month, it will automatically be placed in a special folder called "Free Sheet Music". Only free sheet music of the month can go in this folder.
Holding down your finger on a row will initiate edit mode and begin dragging the current folder your finger is on so you can change it's position.
When you hit the add button while viewing a folder you will see a dialog similar to the "Add Songs" image. Pick the songs you want to add to the folder then hit the add button.
To view your set lists, tap the set list button in the middle of the gray bar which is just above the selection table.
Set lists are very similar to folders when it comes to how you create, modify and populate them. The main diffrance is when you open a piece contained in a set list, the sheet music viewer will have arrows and a menu button which allows you to navigate between the set's pieces.
There is an add button which allows you to add new sets and an edit button which allows you to reorder, rename and remove set lists.
Just like with folders, you can hold your finger down over a row to initiate reordering a set.
To view and edit the contents of a set list, simply tap a row in the selection table or tap an image in the cover flow.
When you hit the add button while viewing a folder you will see a dialog similar to the "Add Songs" image. Pick the songs you want to add to the folder then hit the add button.
When viewing a set list you will notice a number box next to each piece. When you change this number, it will update the order for you automatically. You can rename, drag and remove songs from the set list just like with a folder in edit mode. Use the plus button on the gray bar to add new songs to the end of the set list.
To start viewing a set, make sure you're not in edit mode and click the piece you want to start with. After the piece opens in the viewer you can navigate through the set list as described later.
Similar to folders, you can hold your finger down over a row to initiate reordering a set list.
When you hit the add button while viewing a set list you will see a dialog similar to the "Add Songs" image. Pick the songs you want to add to the folder then hit the add button.
Sheet Music Viewer
When you select a piece from the all songs section or a folder, the piece will open with standard controls.
Use the swipe motion with your finger to quickly change to the next page. You can set the page change method to use a single tap instead of a swipe in the settings. There are also page numbers on the bottom toolbar which allow you to quickly jump to any page.
You can zoom in on the current page using the common pinch method. After you've zoomed in, you can quickly return to the standard zoom by double tapping the page.
After you're done viewing a piece, use the my sheet music button on the bottom left to return to the my sheet music section.
Hide and Restore Toolbar
If you want to focus on the piece you're viewing and don't want to be distracted by the bottom toolbar, you can hide the toolbar with a simple swipe motion.
To hide the toolbar, swipe down with one finger on the toolbar and it will slide off the screen.
If you need to use the toolbar again simply make an upward swipe on the bottom of the screen where the toolbar should be and it will slide back into place.
Your notation will automatically zoom an extra 7% when the toolbar is hidden.
Sheet Music Viewer: Mark-up Tools
To add a text comment, tap the menu button in the lower right. Make sure text comments is highlighted and the switch is on. When you switch the menu button on, the menu will hide and you and the tool will be active. When the tool is active, the icon on the menu button will be highlighted in yellow. When the tool is active and the menu is dismissed, tap the page where you'd like the comment to begin.
A text editor window will popup. Type your note how you'd want it to look on the screen in the window and hit "Save" when you're done. The editor window allows you to select a font, size and color. To edit a comment which already exists, just tap it quickly and the editor window will display. You can always delete a note using the editor window.
Once a note is on a page, if you hold your finger over it for a few seconds it becomes draggable.
From the menu, you can switch the mark-up tool from text comments to highlighter or pen. Each tool has its own submenu which allows you to hide / show and delete that tools markings for a given piece. Switching tools and their properties will automatically active the tool.
When using a highlighter you can choose size and color. There is also an eraser option that you can select at the end of the color list. To begin highlighting, make sure the switch is set to on and the menu is dismissed. You'll see the highlighter icon on the menu button turn from white to yellow. Anywhere you touch on the page will be highlighted with the color and size that you selected.
Pen is very similar to highlighter, the only difference is instead of drawing behind the pages content, anything you draw will appear above the current pages notation.
When you are finished using any mark-up tool, open the menu and set the switch off. The icon on the menu bar will turn from yellow back to white.
Sheet Music Viewer: Conductor Notes
If you select Conductor in the main menu, you will switch the notes that are currently being displayed. If you downloaded notes for this piece in a conductor session, then they will appear just like your personal notes. The conductor notes are read only, but they can be deleted. If no notes have been downloaded, then you will not see a delete button.
Sheet Music Viewer: Transpose
If transpositions are available for a purchased arrangement, a button title transpose will be available on the right side of the menu's bottom toolbar. To transpose the sheet music to another key, simply tap the transpose button from the menu and a list of all available keys will be displayed. Select the key you wish to transpose to, and if the transpositions have already been downloaded to your iPad, your key will change. If the transposition has not yet been downloaded, you will be prompted to download it. Once a transposition has been downloaded to the iPad, it will remain stored on the iPad for offline use.
Sheet Music Viewer: Set List
Set lists with more than one song will have a button on the viewer's toolbar to the left of the menu button. You can tap this button to quickly jump to any song in the set. There are also arrows next to the page numbers which allow you to jump to the next sequential pieces in your set list.
If you are on the title page or page one and you're viewing a piece which isn't first in the set list, when you swipe or tap back a page it will actually switch to the last page of the previous piece in the set list. The same goes for the last page, if you're not on the last piece in the set list and you swipe or tap from the last page it will load the next piece in the set list.
To sync a purchase, select "Manage" on the bottom navigation bar. By default your sync list will be displayed, if it's not, change back from import by tapping "Sync" on the switch located on the right of top title bar. If you have made new purchases, then they will show up here first. If you're online and have your alert settings on, you will be notified automatically if there are new items, and then given the option to sync them. If you wish to save storage space, this screen also allows you to turn off songs you no longer want. You can sort the list with items that have been marked on, off, or both.
Once you have selected which songs you'd like to appear on your sheet music list, hit the sync button and it will download or delete based on the on / off switch for each song. The lower left refresh button will update the songs you have available if you've made any recent purchases. You must be online to sync or refresh (Note: the syn button will only appear if you've made changes form the last sync).
About My Personal Library (Importing)
After purchasing the My Personal Library add-on, you will be able to include your own personal PDF files in your library and access them within the Musicnotes app - including the ability to mark them up and add them to folders and set lists.
Import Your PDFs Through iTunes
Connect your device (iPod or iPad) to your computer and open iTunes. You should now see your device listed on the left side menu under "DEVICES". Click on the name of your iPod or iPad so that you can see the device manager.
After you click on the iPod or iPad item in the left menu, you will see the summary for your device. At the top there is a toolbar bar and you will notice "Summary" is selected. Click the toolbar item that says "Apps."
Once you are under the "Apps" section, scroll down until you see an area titled "File Sharing."
After you find the "File Sharing" section you will see a list of applications which accept file sharing on the left. Select "Musicnotes" from the list of applications. After you select "Musicnotes" the table to the right will show the list of files currently being shared. To add files, simply click the add button on the bottom of this table. When you click the "Add" button a file finding dialog will display. Locate your PDFs on your computer and add them.
Once you've added the files you'd like to import, they will be listed in the table to the right. Click the apply button to sync them to your iPad or iPod.
Processing Your Imported PDF Files
Before you see the files you've added through iTunes you must process them giving them a title and additional optional info.
Launch the Musicnotes Sheet Music Viewer app then select "Manage" from the bottom navigation. By default you will see a sync list containing your current purchases. On the top title bar you will notice a switch which has two modes: Sync and Import. Tap on import to switch to the import manager.
Once you switch to the import manager, you will notice a new gray toolbar below the top title bar. This toolbar contains a switch with two options: Import New and Edit Existing. This toolbar also contains a refresh switch that you can use if you've imported files through iTunes and they're not yet displayed.
"Import New" is selected by default. This section contains a list of files to be processed (given a title and additional optional info) before they are added to your library.
If you are not concerned about titling your imports, you can utilize the "Import All" button at the bottom of the list. Hitting this button will add all the pending imports using the file name as a title (or the meta data tile if available.)
To process a new import individually, select a title from the table and a data editor will display. Enter in as much details as you can about the piece (title is required) then hit the "Import" button to add it to your library. Hitting the "Cancel" button will close out of the editor for that piece starting over the importing process.
After a piece is imported from your personal PDF files, you can go back and edit the details you entered. On the gray toolbar tap set the switch to "Edit Existing" to view imports that are currently part of your library.
To begin editing an existing piece, select a title from the list. The edit existing section is very similar to the import new section except there is a red "Remove" button available when you are editing the details of a piece. Enter the details as you'd like (again, title is required) and hit the "Save" button to apply your changes. If you do hit the "Remove" button, the piece is still available for processing will be move back to the "Import New" section where you can reimported later if you'd like.
When you return to view your current sheet music library under "My Sheet Music" you will now see all of the imports which you have processed. These pieces can be viewed like all of your Musicnotes purchases except that paper type is not supported and the highlighter is drawn darker. Note that the folders section contains a permanent folder title "My Personal Library" which contains all of your currently processed imports.
Your Account Settings (Change User)
Click on the settings button in the bottom navigation bar then hit the "Change User" button. Click to accept the confirmation and it will sign you out and take you to the authentication screen. Note, if you sign out all your synced music and notes will be lost.
In the settings tab, you can turn off auto-refresh, which searches for new songs and updates the songs available in sync list. If auto-refresh is on, you can also toggle the alerts. By default the app will notify you when there are new items in your list.
Turn on the "Sync Free Song of the Month" switch and next time you refresh your song list, it will contain that month's free song.
You can choose to include transpositions for your songs during sync. You can still download transpositions individually while viewing a piece, but turning this option on will download all transpositions so they are available. If the alert setting is on, you will be notified of new transpositions that are available. Turning this option on will increase download time as there is more data being synced.
Sheet Music Viewer Settings
The "Paper Type" setting allows you to change what kind of background paper your piece is displayed on. Tap the blue arrow on the right and a window will appear that allows you to choose from an assortment of different paper types. Once you’ve selected the type you want, touch the “Set Background” button at the top of the window and you will now see that paper in the background when viewing a piece.
The "Page Change" option allows you change how you move to the next or previous page. The default mode is swipe, in which you drag the page with your finger, sliding the next or previous page into view. It only takes a small swipe for the page to change. If you chose "Tap" mode, to change the page all you have to do is quickly tap the left side of the screen to move back a page or the right side of the screen to move to the next page.
If you play fast and the page change animations are slowing you down, turn the "Page Flip Animation" switch off. The next time you are viewing a piece it will instantly jump between pages.
About AirTurn BT-105 Bluetooth Pedal
The AirTurn BT-105 Bluetooth Pedal allows you to switch pages hands free. There are two pedals which allow you to move either forwards or backwards. When viewing a set list you can quickly jump between pieces as you navigate using your foot. Stay focused on what you are doing while you enjoy playing your favorite instrument.
Where to Get The Pedal
To get started you must first own the pedal. You can find out more information and purchase the pedal on the AirTurn web site.
Connect the Pedal to Your iPad
To connect the pedal to your iPad, open the System Settings then go to the General section. Tap Bluetooth and make sure the switch is set to on. When the switch is on, the iPad will automatically start looking for devices. While the iPad is in discover mode, hold the red button on the pedal for one second. The LED will blink 3 times and attempt to pair with your iPad. Tap the AirTurn row under the devices list, it will try to connect to the pedal. If the pedal stoped blinking, turn it off and then back on while the iPad is attempting to connect.
You will know when the pedal is active when you see the word "Connected" next to the AirTurn device.
Be aware that your iPad no longer has a virtual keyboard available while the pedal is connected. When you need to type using the touch screen again, you must disconnect the pedal.
Using the Pedal
Make sure the AirTurn BT-105 is connected as a device under the System Settings. Open a piece or set list like you would normally. Once the piece is open simply use the pedals to go back and forth between pages and sets.
While the pedal is connected to your iPad, you will not always see the virtual keyboard upon interacting with a text area. If this occurs, press the small red button located on the pedal transmitter and it will unlock the on screen keyboard so you can type.
Conductor is a feature which allows you to connect remotely using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth to another iPad. Once connected to the conductor, your iPad will follow along as the conductor views pieces and change pages. Every session has one conductor who hosts and waits for members to join. While viewing a piece the conductor can send you his notes and transpose the piece all members are viewing.
To enable conductor mode, simply go to the settings tab using the main navigation and tap the on switch next to "Conductor Mode Enabled". Once conductor is enabled you will see a new button on the main navigation bar.
Quick Performance Tips
Here are a few tips that will help increase performance while using Conductor:
- Your iPad's antenna can become less responsive after lots of various activity from both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. A power cycle is a good way to clear up these left over connections and start fresh. To power cycle, press and hold the button on top of your iPad. After a few seconds you will see a red arrow, slide it across to turn off the device. After the device shuts down, press and hold the top button again until you see the Apple logo.
- When using Bluetooth, be patient when connecting it may take up to 60 seconds. If it has been longer than 60 seconds, cancel and try again it should connect.
- Always make sure Bluetooth is enabled when using Bluetooth.
- Always make sure Wi-Fi is enabled and you are on the same network when using Wi-Fi.
- Since Bluetooth and Wi-Fi use the same antenna, turn off Bluetooth when using Wi-Fi for a significant speed increase.
- If you were just part of a Conductor session in Wi-Fi and you switched to Bluetooth (or vise versa), you may notice some quarks for several minutes due to the iPad antenna adjusting to the new mode.
- Since the app supports multitasking, it never hurts to restart the app before using Conductor. To do this go to the home screen, hit the home button twice, you will see a row of open apps. Hold your finger over the Musicnotes app for several seconds and then tap the red icon in the upper left to close the app. Finally, launch the Musicnotes app from the home screen like you would normally.
To begin conducting, click the Conductor icon on the navigation bar. You will see a page that has two sections. Find the section called ìBe The Conductor.' You have the option to conduct using Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. If you select Wi-Fi, make sure all members are connected to the same network. (Hint: because Bluetooth uses the same antenna as Wi-Fi, you will notice a significant performance increase if you disable Bluetooth in the system settings when in Wi-Fi mode.) If you choose Bluetooth, make sure that Bluetooth is enabled in the system settings. After selecting a mode you may choose to add a password or leave it blank. When finished, tap conduct.
After starting conduct, you will see a chat room. Other members will see it in the available sessions list and start to join. If you did not add a password then you will see the waiting users list, and you will need to accept/reject each user attempting to join by tapping the appropriate button next to the member's name. If accepted, the new member will be able to follow along with you as you open pieces and turn pages. If you did add a password then you will not see the waiting list and members will be automatically accepted. If you are viewing a piece as a conductor and a member joins with the correct password, then that member will automatically catch up and start viewing the same piece.
If you swipe a member name, you will see a red "Remove" button. Use this button to dismiss them from the session.
At the bottom of the screen you will see an ìAllow Member Page Changes' switch. When off, members will always follow along when you change pages. If on, members have the choice to either follow along with the conductor, or flip their pages manually.
Once all members have joined the session you can begin conducting. Use the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen to switch to the my sheet music section, then choose any song or set list you'd like members to view. The connect member's screens will be restricted to the chat view until you launch a piece or they disconnect. If they don't own the piece you've selected they will be notified with an option to purchase.
As conductor, simply use the app as normal and connected members will follow along.
Conducting: Viewing a Piece
After you've opened a piece or set list it will look much the same as you've experienced in offline usage, except that in the main menu there will be an extra section under my notes. If the piece or set list you're viewing has notes associated with it, you will see a green send notes button. Tapping this button will give all connected members the option to download the conductor's personal notes.
The bottom of the menu now contains a conductor segment. If you have downloaded notes for a piece while connected to the Conductor, viewing this section will display these notes.
When you transpose a piece or pick another song from the set list, all the connected members will perform the same action.
Joining A Conductor
To join a conductor, click on the conductor icon in the main navigation bar. In the first section called ìJoin the Conductor' you will see a list of available conductors. You must use the switch above the list of available sessions to select the connection type you are looking for. Confirm with the conductor if the session is in Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
If the session is in Wi-Fi, be sure you're on the same wireless network. To increase performance when using Wi-Fi, it is highly recommended that you disable Bluetooth in the system settings.
If the session is in Bluetooth, you can leave Wi-Fi enabled, but make sure Bluetooth is enabled in the system settings. It may take up to 30 seconds to establish the first connection to the conductor.
If you find that you're unable to connect after a long period of time, then cancel the join attempt and try again. Double check that you are on the same Wi-Fi network, or when using Bluetooth, that it's enabled in the system settings. Remember, sometimes Bluetooth takes awhile to connect.
Once the conductor has accepted you you will see a chat screen. Notice that the navigation bar is no longer displayed. You are restricted to the chat screen and to viewing pieces designated by the conductor until you disconnect. If allowed by the conductor, you can switch ìChange Pages Myself' to on at the bottom. This will give you control of what page you view after a conductor launches a piece. Typically, members will follow along with the conductor, but there may be special cases where manual page changes are necessary.
After a conductor launches a piece or set list you will see a familiar sheet music view. If page changes are off you will only see the piece's title and current page number on the bottom toolbar.
If a conductor offers to send you notes you will see an alert and be given the choice to download these notes. If you choose yes, your old conductor notes for that piece will be overwritten. You will then resume following along once the download is complete.
When connected as a member you will notice the main menu in the viewer is restricted. You only have the option to switch which note set you are currently viewing. There is also an info button in the top right if you'd like to know more about the piece.
When you are connected to the conductor there is no zooming or note editing.
