A very good piano transcription of Sousa

9/25/2012 8:02am

This piano solo transcription of Sousas famous march is both challenging and rewarding: I am still working on getting the final two strains up to speed. It requires a strong and athletic left hand throughout to manage the moves and leaps in octaves. The last two stains become big for the right hand too, with the melody doubled in octaves and harmonies added to create a full and rich sound of the original. There are a few erroneous notes throughout that the experienced performer will have no trouble catching and correcting. Of course, for those who are playing this because its the theme music for the Monty Python show, theres no need to learn the trio and final strain. Theyll just need to find a giant cartoon foot to come down out of nowhere to squash everything at the end of the second strain. So that does present its own performance challenges.
