MADISON, WI — May 17, 2014 —
Sheet music and the military may not be associated with one another all too often, but for the nearly six weeks between Memorial Day and Independence Day, Musicnotes.com has made a tradition of donating $1 of every patriotic sheet music piece sold to Honor Flight programs. Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America’s war veterans through tours to their respective memorials in Washington, D.C.
Musicnotes initiated the annual donation drive in 2011, after Musicnotes Chairman Tim Reiland happened to land at an airport the same time an Honor Flight trip was returning. While Reiland was familiar with the organization and had personally pledged support in the past, experiencing the event first-hand prompted his idea to get Musicnotes involved.
“Three and even four generations were there to greet them,” Reiland said. “It was incredibly emotional.”
Nationally, Honor Flight Networks have been providing veterans expense-paid reflection trips to Washington, D.C. war memorials since 2005. Priority is give to World War II veterans along with veterans who may be terminally ill. Recent numbers indicate an estimated 640 WWII veterans die each day, so time is of the essence to honor these brave men and women. Tours of honor also haven been opened up to heroes who served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
The time between Memorial Day and July 4th is peak season for patriotic sheet music downloads at Musicnotes.com, Reiland said, making the promotion a great match with the timing of Honor Flight trips. Hundreds of patriotic arrangements are sold each day to musicians, covering nearly every instrument and skill level.
Additionally, many Musicnotes employees have had the pleasure to see family members and friends honored by the program, and even more have veterans in their families, Reiland said.
“This is a program everyone can get behind — we owe a debt of gratitude to our vets.”
Last year, Musicnotes donated $7,200 between two local Honor Flight programs, Badger Honor Flight in Madison, Wis., where the company is headquartered, and the nearby Stars and Stripes Honor Flight in Milwaukee, Wis. This year, the company plans to again split proceeds between the two programs. Musicnotes also encourages its more than 140,000 daily website visitors to contribute and/or support any program in the Honor Flight Network by visiting http://www.honorflight.org/donate.
