Can you believe that it’s been 20 years since Hairspray first premiered on Broadway? It’s true: the show first debuted in NYC on August 15, 2002!

The Broadway musical was adapted from the 1988 film of the same name. And once it made it to the stage, it was a hit! Hairspray ended up winning 8 Tony Awards, including Best Musical and Best Original Score. The original cast featured Harvey Fierstein, Marissa Jaret Winokur, Mary Bond Davis, Laura Bell Bundy, Matthew Morrison, and more.

The musical was eventually taken and adapted into a new film, which came out in 2007. And years later, NBC televised a showing of ‘Hairspray Live’!
