If you’re getting ready for your college auditions, it’s likely that you’ve had this thought come across your mind: How are you going to stand out during the audition?

We’re here with musical theater actor and coach Julie Galorenzo, whose video will walk you though six important tips. After you watch her TikTok, keep scrolling for a general recap of her recommendations!

1. Don’t put on a show

Find a way to authentically engage in the room (whether live or virtually). Speak from your voice!

2. Be prepared

Make sure you’re ready with all things, including: technical aspects, how you set up your sheet music, how to speak in the room or handle interview questions, and more.

Preparation is not just how well you know the notes and words. Have you read the play? Have you seen the musical?

Being prepared means you also need to be ready for anything they throw at you! For example, others have been asked to say their monologue backwards or say their monologue to the floor.

It doesn’t mean you need to have a response ready for any of these random requests; rather, you need to be prepared in that you know that that might happen. And as long as it can be done safely, go ahead and do it!

3. Make sure the material serves your current ability

Make sure the material works with your ability right now. If the song has certain notes that you aren’t able to hit every single time, you need to change your material. It’s vital that you can perform everything 100% of the time!

4. Read instructions thoroughly

The instructions can change from school to school, so make sure you have read them thoroughly.

5. Be human (see #1 again)

If you authentically engage as yourself, remember that it’s okay to be human! If you stumble while saying your name, or you accidentally say the wrong title or author, correct your mistake and move on.
(Note: Don’t stop during your monologue or while you’re singing unless there’s a safety concern)

6. Wear something you feel amazing in

Make sure you’re feeling great in your outfit!

We wish you the best of luck in all of your auditions!
