It’s been over fifty years since the Stonewall riots sparked a massive movement for LGBTQ equality, and new members of the community are still emerging. The music world is no exception to this. Lil Nas X came out as gay at the end of Pride Month last year and has since released two singles that address his identity directly – “MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name)” and “SUN GOES DOWN.” Nicholas Petricca, the singer for Walk the Moon, revealed that he’s bisexual via his Instagram. TJ Osborne of the Osborne Brothers broke a few more barriers in country music when he came out as gay. And Demi Lovato, in the aftermath of their new album and its corresponding documentary, has come out both as pansexual and nonbinary.
At Musicnotes, we love celebrating the power that music has to express emotions and make bold statements – so whether you’re going to a Pride event this year or staying at home, here are 55 songs with which you can sing your truth, whatever that may be.
