Celebrating 20 Years of 'Wicked'

"Defying Gravity" sheet music

This month, the beloved Broadway musical Wicked is celebrating its 20th Anniversary!

The first performance of Wicked took place on October 8, 2003, at the Gershwin Theatre, where it still remains to this day. The show officially opened a few weeks later, on October 30. The original cast included Idina Menzel as Elphaba and Kristin Chenoweth as Glinda.

Wicked has won three Tonys, including Best Leading Actress in a Musical (Idina Menzel). Additionally, Stephen Schwartz, the composer behind the music & lyrics, won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.

And soon, fans will be able to see Wicked on the big screen! The movie adaptation will star Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande as Elphaba and Glinda, respectively. The film will be broken out into two parts, with the first one set to premiere in November 2024.
