Musicnotes Free Song

For this month’s free song, we’re bringing you Ray Henderson’s classic, “The Birth of the Blues”!

The unmistakable sound of the blues was first played by Black musicians in the American South almost 150 years ago, and its walking bass lines, blue notes, and use of call and response have shaped the sound of popular music ever since.

“The Birth of The Blues” is Ray Henderson’s poetic homage to the genre’s origins. Since its debut on Broadway stages in the 1920s, this favorite has been recorded by many jazz legends, including Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, and Sammy Davis Jr., and it’s now available for free this May!
