Find engaging fall and Halloween piano music for beginners, growing pianists, teens, and advanced students.

In this guide we’ll cover:

Fall is a wonderful time to introduce music with a little extra mystery, drama, and imagination. When I select seasonal repertoire, I look for pieces that are fun to perform while still supporting students’ musical development.

I also like to offer alternatives for students and families who do not celebrate Halloween. Autumn leaves, harvest themes, outer space, nocturnal animals, classical favorites, and mysterious soundscapes can all create a seasonal experience.

Five tips for planning Fall and Halloween repertoire

  • Plan for a shorter fall timeline: Assign pieces by mid- to late September, giving students four to six weeks to prepare for late-October recitals or “Monster Concerts.” Choose music slightly below their usual level to accommodate busy back-to-school schedules.
  • Offer autumn-themed alternatives: Include non-Halloween options such as falling leaves, harvest, outer space, and nocturnal animal themes so every student can participate comfortably.
  • Use musical effects to create atmosphere: Minor keys, low-register tone clusters, pedal washes, staccato lines, and glissandos introduce students to sound experimentation and expressive freedom at the keyboard.
  • Use rote teaching for early beginners: Teach short ostinatos and recurring motifs by memory so beginners can perform rich, atmospheric music beyond their current reading level.
  • Emphasize dynamics and storytelling: Look for arrangements with dramatic contrasts, sudden subito forte “scares,” and gradual crescendos to help students build stage presence and musical storytelling.

Piano music for Year 1 students (Beginner Level)

Choosing seasonal music for first-year students can be challenging: beginners have limited reading experience, but they are often eager to play dramatic, expressive pieces. Pattern-based arrangements, thoughtful pedal use, and teacher duets can help them create a full sound and perform with confidence. I recommend getting started with these collections.

Note: Digital music books are cover to cover song books available in digital format. They can be accessed on your iPad for easy playing, or printed depending on your preference.  I find these to be a nice way to sprinkle in some variety for my students. It also provides good value for money (as it's something that can be revisited per student, or across students).

First Halloween Solos: Features 20 primer-level, minor-key pieces created for first-year piano students. The collection blends Halloween favorites like "Trick or Treat", "Waltz of the Witches", and "Fright Night!" with spooky selections such as "Shadow Walker" and "Out of the Fog", plus clever twists on classical melodies including Chopin’s "Funeral March" and Bach’s "Toccata in D Minor".

Book Overview

  • Level: Primer / Early Beginner (Ideal for Year 1 students)
  • Format: 20 original minor-key showcase solos with optional teacher duet accompaniments included for every piece
  • Age-Appropriate Appeal: Features mature-sounding, arrangements free of childish lyrics or overly-frightening themes, making the music engaging and suitable for all age groups, from young beginners to teens and adults.

Key Features & Pedagogy

  • Teacher Duets: Rich accompaniments expand the sound world for early readers without increasing student difficulty.

Level Up! Spooktacular Halloween Edition  - Thi is a multi-level songbook featuring 10 spooky solos, each presented at three distinct difficulty levels (30 total versions). Designed to align with the Piano Pronto method series, it allows teachers to assign the same piece to students of varying skill levels or let a single student "level up" as they progress.

Book Structure & Concept

  • Multi-Level Format: Each of the 10 titles includes Version 1 (Primer/Early Elementary), Version 2 (Elementary), and Version 3 (Late Elementary).
  • Pedagogical Alignment: Matches early reading levels while maintaining minor-key drama and full, resonant sonorities across all versions. Appropriate for all age groups.
  • Benefits of Scaffolded Learning: Enables siblings or group classes to study the same piece at tailored technical levels, builds student confidence through a clear, familiar progression path, and simplifies studio-wide recital prep.
  • Multi-Year Value Add: Provides long-term utility for students and parents, allowing a student to reuse the book for two to three consecutive Halloween seasons by advancing to harder versions of their favorite pieces as their technical skills grow.
  • Included Titles: The 10 featured selections blend original showcase solos ("Super Spooky Spy Guy", "Fright Night!", "The Spook", "Trick or Treat") with clever minor-key twists and classical mashups ("Fear Elise!", "Funeral March for a Jack-o'-lantern", "Little Toccata in D", "The Mountain King's End Game", "Midnight Bells Are Ringing", and "Things That Go Pop in the Night").

Ensemble Repertoire Suggestions for Year 1 students

Ensemble pieces from four-hand duets to six-hand trios strengthen foundational musicianship by developing steady rhythm, active listening, and dynamic balance. Playing with a peer or teacher also eases performance anxiety while creating a fuller, more resonant sound than a beginner can produce alone. In studio recitals, ensembles add visual variety, build community, and create high-energy moments that engage audiences and boost student confidence. Here’s my top two picks for those looking for ensemble pieces.

“Ode to a Dark Star “

  • Level: Primer / Early Beginner
  • Details: A spooky, minor-key spin on "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" designed for first-year players or group piano classes.

“In the Hall of the Mountain King “

  • Level: Beginner
  • Details: A simplified 6-hand adaptation of Edvard Grieg’s iconic, atmospheric classical theme.
