Richard Davis: Renowned Jazz Bassist and Professor Dies at 93

On September 6, 2023, Richard Davis passed away at the age of 93.

Richard was a beloved musician, known for his talent on the double bass. Not only did he release his own albums, but over the years, he collaborated with many other artists. And Richard didn't just work with jazz musicians. He performed on albums with Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Dorothy Ashby, Bruce Springsteen, and more.

Richard was also known for his work outside of his performances and albums. In 1977, he became a professor of University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he taught for 39 years before retiring in 2016. While in Wisconsin, he was known for his activism, as he founded the Madison Wisconsin Institute for Healing Racism, Inc.

He helped bring music to an even younger audience, having founded the Richard Davis Foundation for Young Bassists back in 1993.

Here's a clip of Richard as he performs "September in the Rain" on the bass alongside Sarah Vaughan, Ronnell Bright, and Art Morgan:

Thanks for all of the wonderful music, Richard Davis. Rest in peace.
