· “Can You Hear the Music” from Oppenheimer: Ludwig Göransson recorded the soundtrack for the movie Oppenheimer in just five days, and the whole score focuses on the violin. In the movie, physicist Niels Bohr asks Oppenheimer if he can hear the music, and this song begins. The piece includes many tempo changes, and it becomes quite challenging as the tempo speeds up quickly towards the end. Focus on the beginning duple vs. triple patterns, and feel the pattern changes every four measures.

· “In Your Love” by Tyler Childers: From his upcoming album Rustin' in the Rain, Tyler brings together coal mining and love in this moving ballad about the hard work of true love. This song features a piano-friendly accompaniment, so be sure to keep the syncopated rhythms at a relaxed tempo.

· “Moondance” by Jon Michael Ogletree: Originally by Van Morrison, this jazz-rock standard eventually became a jazz standard. This arrangement from Signature Artist Jon Michael Ogletree transitions from free, improvised sections to full-on jazz swing. Be sure to bring out the bass line when the swinging jazz section comes back in!

· “On a Carousel” by The Hollies: This song was a big hit for the British pop rock band in 1967 when it hit #11 on the Billboard charts. The lyrics compare a relationship to going round and round on a carousel. The sheet music is pretty straightforward, so be sure to put your own twist on this retro classic!

· “One Note Samba” by Yenne Lee: Signature Artist Yenne Lee puts her spin on this bossa nova and jazz standard by Antonio Carlos Jobim. This challenging arrangement features a variety of fingerstyle techniques, including muting effects to create a more percussive sound in parts. The melody of the song is based on one note, so the possibilities are endless for improvising!

· “Gloria (Angels We Have Heard on High)” by BYU Noteworthy: It’s never too early to start planning choral repertoire for Christmas! This SATB arrangement by female a cappella group BYU Noteworthy incorporates vocal percussion elements, especially in bass part. It also features a soloist, so be sure to focus on unifying vowels and bringing out moving notes in the backup vocals.

Unique Pick of the Week

· “Playing God” by Feng E: Originally by rock group Polyphia, this instrumental song translates surprisingly well to ukulele. The arrangement by Signature Artist Feng E features percussive fingerstyling and demonstrates the possibilities of this small instrument. Practice this song slowly at first and gradually build up to the original performance tempo.
