A lot of pianists aspire to play the beautiful, poetic music of Chopin. This is a very worthy goal and definitely an excellent accomplishment to work towards. However, once you explore some of his music, it becomes clear that many of his most famous pieces are quite difficult and require fairly advanced technical skills on the piano.

If you’re looking for some introductory music by Chopin that’s not out of reach, we’ve gathered these 9 pieces that would be a good way to get started.

One challenge that many piano learners face is finding music at an appropriate level. Learning music that is too easy can be boring and learning music that is too difficult can be frustrating and can lead to poor technique and bad habits.

“The Pianist’s Guide To Standard Teaching and Performance Literature” by Jane Magrath is a excellent resource to have on hand for anyone teaching or learning the piano. In this book, Magrath categorizes all intermediate, classical piano repertoire into 10 levels. (You can read a full review of this book here and learn more about how to use it to select level-appropriate repertoire for piano students.) This book will help you understand how the difficulty of certain pieces compares to other pieces.

These 9 pieces recommend all fall into levels 6 or 7 using Magrath’s leveling system. Although these are easier pieces compared to some of Chopin’s other pieces, they still require strong note-reading skills and a solid technical foundation on the piano.
