Jenny O’Connor was performing at the Texas Renaissance Festival in 2007 when a patron filmed a short clip of her performing the Theme from the Last of the Mohicans. He posted it to YouTube with the title The Hot Violinist. At that time Jenny was focused on a live performing career with two nationally touring bands E Muzeki and Circa Paleo. She didn’t find out about the online video, or the fact that it had gone viral surpassing 1 million views, for several years. In 2011, a comedian friend of hers found the video and purchased www.thehotviolinist.com, basically as a joke. While Jenny had not been aware of the video, she had been receiving almost daily requests via her band’s website for sheet music for her rendition. Finally it made sense why so many people were asking her for her tips and secrets on playing this iconic piece! Her two touring folk rock fusion bands played a wide variety of music from various countries and cultures. She learned these pieces by ear from old recordings and directly from various folk fiddle teachers along her travels.

Jenny started late at age 18, and is not classically trained, so sheet music reading was a new thing. She eventually hand wrote a version with pencil and paper and began a YouTube channel. The channel began with a few videos about ornamentation for the Last of the Mohicans and has expanded to help hundreds of adult learners pick up this instrument later in life. Her performing career and online teaching mission proves, it’s never too late to be a hot violinist. Studio recordings with Circa Paleo and E Muzeki have been used in TV and film and are streaming on Spotify and Pandora. Jenny is now retired from live performing to teach from home in Austin, Texas and raise her son Oscar. She is still just as much a costume enthusiast as she was in her Renn Faire touring days.
